Digital Arts

I’ve always liked the intersection of Art and Technology. I teach a number of classes which utilize a wide range of digital media tools. I teach classes in programming, video game design, web development, digital media, 3D design and robotics. Fortunately, my school has a wide variety of hardware and software tools which allow my students to create some inspiring work. Below are a few examples.

3D Chess Set

A recent 3D design project involved scanning my 7th grade students with a 3D scanner (structure sensor) and bringing those scanned obj files into Tinkercad in order to create individual chess pieces of my students. It was important that this design challenge followed some traditional rules which are ubiquitous across most chess sets. The chess pieces all needed to have standard base plates and the pieces needed to increase in size as you move inward from the edge of the board (from Rook to King). The hats also needed to be standard sizes. The class worked together to sort out all of the necessary details. They were also surprisingly gracious in determining which student got to be which chess piece. I tried to be equitable by allowing one student to be either king or queen. Other students were represented by being either both Rooks, Bishops or Knights. Lastly, the student who agreed to be pawn was allowed to represent all the pawns on the board (16 in total and the only student to be on both sides of the board).

Keyframe Animation

I teach a unit on Keyframe animation using Adobe Animate in a web design class in large part because this skill is transferable to other applications. Movie and sound editing programs utilize keyframing in order to produce incredible results. Animate lets you stack layers of objects in a timeline and then animate them across the stage using keyframes.
